What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that result from disturbing life experiences. By focusing on the brain's natural healing processes, EMDR helps individuals reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their lingering effects.

How EMDR Works

EMDR therapy involves eight phases:

  • History-Taking Session(s): The therapist gathers detailed information about the client's history and identifies specific traumatic memories to target.

  • Preparation: The therapist ensures that the client has several ways of handling emotional distress, such as relaxation techniques.

  • Assessment: A target memory is identified, and the client is asked to focus on different aspects of it.

  • Desensitization: Using bilateral stimulation (e.g., eye movements), the therapist helps the client process the traumatic memory.

  • Installation: The therapist works to strengthen positive beliefs related to the memory.

  • Body Scan: The client is guided to identify any residual physical tension related to the memory and process it.

  • Closure: The therapist ensures that the client feels stable and safe before ending the session.

  • Reevaluation: The progress is reviewed, and any remaining issues are addressed in subsequent sessions.
